Targetting Children During Wartime

The war dragged on, Operation Barbarossa stalled in the East. Nazis needed a new and even more drastic approach to rid the occupied land of the native people whose Resistance grew and became a dangerous thorn in their behind. Germans were not the first nor the last to realize that to stop Resistance from re-growing new hands who fought them was to cut them off in the womb. A new and grizzly stage in the warfare thus began: killing and kidnapping children.

It was a multi-faceted war:

- As more and more German men were being killed in the Eastern Front it became imperative to restore the shrinking numbers of cannon-fodder. A special operation began: prowling occupied Poland in search of racially acceptable children, mass-kidnapping infants, children and youth. Trainloads were carted back to the Reich were the children were given for adoption (the youngest) or indoctrination and resocialization (the older) before their integration into German society.

- Then there were the other children, those who did not pass the purity criteria. If they weren't killed on the spot or did not die of malnutrition they were locked up (with or without their mothers) in concentration camps.

- Children are the future. By killing and stealing Polish children Germans were killing biological existence of the Polish people...

As early as September 1939 Polish Armed Forced (Home Army, Peasants Battalions, People's Army, and more) and Civilian Administration (Directorate of Civil Resistance) in German-occupied territories began to form their underground structures. Starting as ad-hoc scattered groups operating in secrecy practiced over past centuries these would in time consolidate and form the largest Underground State and Armed Forces in Europe [we will talk about this in more detail in upcoming posts]. Among the numerous organs of a functioning underground state were civilian courts, military courts and their long arms of punishing law. Throughout history there existed traitors who collaborated with the enemy, they exist today and will exist in the future. While Poland was the only occupied country that did not collaborate with Germans (Vichy, Quisling and their iterations across Europe) there were individual flunkeys among the population who served or worked with the mortal enemy. Underground civilian prosecutors and military intelligence actively tracked them down. They were investigated, sentenced and punished according to the laws of the time of war. Special units of executioners carried out sentences that were publicised in underground press as warning, sending shockwaves across the country, providing proof that the Polish underground authorities exist and are working.

From the Underground Criminal Code:

"Whoever commits the crime of treason, espionage, provocation, denunciation or inhuman persecution and harm to the Polish population - shall be subject to the death penalty."

Let there be no mistake. A Nation has a long memory. And equally long arms that will reach its traitors anywhere.
